Get to know how to register in The Hague and get a citizen service number (BSN number). Read what documents are needed.
It all starts with your length of stay. If you are looking to stay in the Netherlands/The Hague under 4 months, there is a different office and different paperwork that you will need than when you are staying for a longer period.
A stay shorter than 4 months
When you live in The Netherlands for a period shorter than 4 months, you can register as a non-resident in the Basic Registration Persons (BRP). You do this at a municipality with a counter for non-residence. After registration you will also receive a citizen service number (BSN). In the Hague, the office is Spui 70 2511 BT The Hague
The documentation that you need is a valid proof of identity. In this case a passport or identity card is useful. Registration van be done as soon as you arrive. If you have a partner or children that also need to be registered, they should be present. For registering children, a birth certificate is required.
A stay longer than 4 months
When you live in The Netherlands for a period longer than 4 months, you can register yourself with the municipality where you live. After registration, you will receive a BSN number for you to use. The same documentation is needed (a valid proof of identity), but also a copy of your rental agreement. This agreement needs to be signed by you as the lessee and by the home owner as the lessor. Make sure that you receive your rental agreement in time for your appointment, otherwise you are not able to register.
Make an appointment within 5 days of your arrival. If you have a partner or children to be registered, they need to be present during the appointment at the municipality. For registering children, a birth certificate is required.
A fairly easy process, but often due to the language barrier a hard one.
